Sugar and spice
A Pretty Mess rocks the Redwood
By John Sollenberger 12/31/2009
YES, THERE IS SOMETHING TO DO ON NEW YEAR’S DAY OTHER THAN watch football or endless replays of the Rose Parade. You can bid bye-bye to the holidays and say hello to the weekend in an irreverent rock way Friday night with a quick run down the Pasadena Freeway to the Redwood Bar & Grill to see A Pretty Mess tear up the landscape.
These four young, good-looking babes from the San Fernando Valley have been shaking up the local music scene since their 2006 conception, playing a busy schedule of club dates around the area. This is no la-la-la sugar-and-spice girl group. These are rockers to the core, with strong punk roots laced with straight-ahead rock and pop appeal. The aggressive guitar sound, mixed with raw, weathered vocals and a heartbeat rhythm section (if your heart was just plugged into a defibrillator, that is) makes for some ear-pleasing sound in an eye-pleasing package.
Their latest disc is “We are the Damaged Youth,” available at prettymess.com.
Music starts at 9 p.m. Friday. Also scheduled are The Zeros and The Defendants. The Redwood Bar & Grill is at 316 W. Second St., Los Angeles. Call (213) 680-2600.
