Offering a mix of glamour and tradition to the lucky young ladies chosen, the Tournament of Roses’ annual Rose Queen and Royal Court tryouts have long been one of Pasadena’s most hallowed events. As a result, more than 1,000 Pasadena-area young women are expected to compete for a coveted spot in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade when initial auditions are held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 and from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 20.

A month-long tryout process including quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will winnow the field down to seven finalists for the Royal Court, who will reign over the 122nd Rose Parade and 97th Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1 with the theme Building Dreams, Friendships & Memories before a worldwide audience of millions. The final announcement of the court will take place at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 11, and the announcement of the queen will be made at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 19. Both announcements will occur at the Tournament House.

Contestants will be primarily judged on their poise and speaking abilities while answering questions about such topics as their schools and the city of Pasadena. While judges will not know either the contestants’ ages or their school name, participants must be seniors at one of 25 approved area high schools or attending Pasadena City College.

All other rules and details for the competition can be found at the official Web site, tournamentofroses.org. Tournament House is located at 391 S. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena.

"Primarily judged on poise and speaking abilities"? Huh? If that were true, a Toastmaster meeting would suffice. Or, boys would be contestants, too.

Another silly beauty pageant.
