Thelonious Dub takes residency at Brenart

The instrumental trio Thelonious Dub has only been around about a year, but they’ve already hit a milestone, logging 100 gigs.

Now the band takes up residency at the new Brenart Restaurant and Wine Bar in Old Pasadena, beginning Friday and from then on either Friday or Saturday nights, depending on their obviously busy schedule.

“Now with our residency at Brenart, we’ll be well on our way to 200 gigs,” says founder and guitarist Joe Bartone. “I guess folks are digging our complete misunderstanding of both jazz and reggae.”

The mix includes an ambitious blend of genres that includes improvised jazz, dub reggae and jam-band styles, with classic tunes by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, among others, plus witty pop and rock covers and originals thrown in.

Music starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Brenart, 53 E. Union St., Pasadena. Call (626) 796-7460.
