Grammy-winning composer Bill Cunliffe serenades All Saints’ oldest parishioner
By Carl Kozlowski 02/04/2010
All Saints Church parishioner and composer-in-residence Bill Cunliffe enjoyed the thrill of winning a Grammy last Sunday. This Sunday, he’ll provide the thrills by bestowing an entirely different honor on fellow All Saints member Lydia Wilkins, who celebrated her 106th birthday on Jan. 12.
Wilkins, All Saints’ oldest parishioner, was a major figure in Pasadena’s civil rights movement when she helped desegregate the city’s swimming pools as a young woman. In addition, her husband William was a priest at All Saints.
Cunliffe, who won the 2010 Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement for his work on a special “West Side Story” medley, will be performing a song that he composed in Wilkins’ honor.
Based on Psalm 106, the song will be played at the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services. Cunliffe wrote a song for Wilkins two years ago, on her 104th birthday, based on Psalm 104. All are welcome to attend the services, which will be held at the church, located at 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena. Visit allsaints-pas.org for more information about this and other All Saints events.
