Jazz benefit helps battered women

A Window Between Worlds has helped thousands of battered women in 28 states with its network of crisis shelters, transitional housing and outreach centers. But now the nonprofit is looking for some help and will be hosting a benefit from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the popular local jazz club and eatery redwhite+bluezz.

Music and Art Fest ‘09 will feature musical performances by Mishon, Rick Hack, Natasha Slayton, Danielle DeAndrea, Pearl Wengrod, Lindsey Harper and Bryan Harrell in addition to a silent auction, snacks, a gift boutique and two hands-on interactive art projects.

"We use art as a healing tool and right now we support 129 shelters nationwide," said Trini Nuñez, administrative coordinator for the nonprofit, which also provides job training. "The art allows women and children to have a voice."

The suggested donation for admission is $30, or $20 for students (ID required), which includes some food. In addition to donations, 40 percent of alcohol sales will also go to help the cause.

"I hope people will leave the event not only understanding domestic violence, but be able to prevent it. I hope that we get a lot of students so we can have a discussion," said Nuñez.

The Music and Art Fest '09 benefit takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at redwhite+bluezz, 70 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena. Call (310) 396-0317 or visit awbw.org.
