Education activists have begun circulating petitions for the formation of an Altadena Unified School District.

Maurice Morse, Shirlee Smith and Bruce Wasson contacted LA County officials in January to start the process of letting Altadena voters decide whether the community should break away form the embattled Pasadena Unified School District. The district angered many Altadenans when it decided to close four elementary schools, two of them located in Altadena, due to a more than $6 million deficit.

Morse, Smith and Wasson received official petitions Tuesday that, if signed by 25 percent of registered Altadena voters, would lead to a ballot measure on succession from the PUSD.

If that measure is eventually drafted and approved, nine schools and some 4,000 students would then compose an independent Altadena Unified School District.
