Businessman and developer Harvey Knell, who years ago tried unsuccessfully to purchase Pasadena’s historic Raymond Theatre to re-open it as an entertainment venue, has been elected president of the Pasadena POPS Orchestra Board of Directors.

Founded in 1987, the POPS performs in Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. This year’s season begins Friday with guest star Andrea Marcovicci.

Knell also serves on the board of the Armory Center for the Arts and as president of KCB Management, a Pasadena-based boutique asset-management firm.

In June 2001, Knell and Los Angeles attorney Pierce O’Donnell, a co-founder of the Pasadena Weekly, were unable to reach an agreement with Raymond Theatre owners Gene and Marilyn Buchanan to purchase the structure for $3.5 million.
