There have been plenty of great showdowns in the sports world over time, like Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier. There have been great battles in the political world, like Abe Lincoln vs. Stephen Douglas. But Tuesday, All Saints Church and Live Talks LA are serving up an intellectual battle royal between world-famous spiritualist Deepak Chopra and Caltech physicist Leonard Mlodinow that seeks to answer the most basic questions of the universe and the existence of God.
Speaking in a debate moderated by popular KPCC host Patt Morrison titled “War of the Worldviews: Science versus Spirituality,” Chopra and Mlodinow will discuss how the universe emerged, the nature of time, the meaning of life, what defines being human and, ultimately, the connection between the mind and the brain. The two met a few years back, when Chopra appeared at a Caltech debate on “The Future of God,” and have since teamed up to co-author a book exploring these same issues.
“It’s a very interesting book because each chapter is written in point-counterpoint style,” says Ted Habte-Gabr, producer of the Live LA Talks series, which is currently running its second full season of celebrity discussions at locations across Los Angeles. “We approached KPCC and Patt Morrison, and I’m honored to be hosting the LA stop on their national book tour.”
Deepak Chopra and Leonard Mlodinow debate “Science versus Spirituality” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena. Tickets are $20, with prices ranging up to $40 for the discussion and their book, and $95 for a VIP reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the book and their discussion. Visit livetalksla.org.
