Edwin Mills by Equator (formerly Equator) in Old Pasadena is the place to be for an early evening of jazz Wednesday night with singer Sandra Booker.
The former coffee shop was reborn a couple of years back as Edwin Mills by Equator, a restaurant and bar. The establishment hosts live music every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesday, Booker lends her stellar jazz voice to the ambiance.
Booker is highly regarded as one of the top voices of the underground jazz scene. The New Orleans native is well known for her virtuoso scat abilities, on-the-mark timing and crystal-clear tone. Her Southern roots and adherence to her New Orleans heritage take center stage in her performances, with her interpretations echoing elements of jazz, blues, soul, funk, gospel and classical styles.
Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms with French chanson, gypsy and street music into an ear-pleasing package, her voice takes in a full range of styles. Booker has performed with top artists, including Lalo Schifrin, Wynton Marsalis & the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Billy Mitchell, Ernie Watts and numerous others.
Music starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Edwin Mills by Equator, 22 Mills Place, Pasadena. No cover. Call (626) 564-8656 or visit edwinmills.com.
