Sunday afternoon, catch a cool matinee show at Coffee Gallery Backstage as the unique sounds of the Ukulele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere rock the house.
The terms rock and ukulele may not quite go together like a hand in a glove, and the band doesn’t spell its name exactly like the instrument, but they get the point across in a show that’s made them a popular draw hereabouts.
Formed in 2011 in Silver Lake, the band offers a twist on the venerable instrument. TUOWH performs songs from various genres and wraps them into a style they call “a ukulele wall of sound.” You can expect to hear classic rock, new wave, rap, top 40 and some other styles as well.
The formula has worked well enough that the group has been tapped for community and charity events and even the occasional celebrity wedding around the area.
The fun starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $18. Call (626) 797-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.
