The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) has recognized Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Journal News publishers Joe and Ruthie Hopkins as the 41st Assembly District’s “2018 Unsung Heroes.”

“Joe and Ruthie Hopkins are pillars of the black community in the San Gabriel Valley,” said Democratic Assembly member Chris Holden of Pasadena, who represents the 41st District and chairs the California Legislative Black Caucus. “They continue the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through their voices and actions.”

Since 1989, Joe and Ruthie Hopkins have co-owned and published the only African-American owned newspaper in the San Gabriel Valley. In that 29-year span, the paper has often been at the forefront of issues concerning the African-American community. At times, it has served as an alternative to daily newspapers that have lacked the resources to cover issues in Northwest Pasadena.
