While Canada isn’t generally thought of as a blues heartland, our neighbor to the north produces some awesome representatives of the genre, among them Hapdog Brown and his band, who will be playing Saturday night at Arcadia Blues Club.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Brown (yes, Harpdog is his real name) has logged tens of thousands of miles touring the festivals and clubs of Canada, the northwestern US and Germany. He’s spread the gospel of blues by blowing a mean blues harmonica, and over the years has released four CDs to critical high-fives.

In 1995, his “Home Is Where the Harp Is” album won the coveted Muddy Award for Best North West Blues Release from the Cascade Blues Association in Portland. He followed that with a Juno Award nomination for Best Blues Release in Canada that same year. Since then, he’s received numerous other awards and performed with some of the top blues musicians.
