Police arrested a man at his home in Pasadena last Friday on suspicion of brutally murdering a 76-year-old grandmother in her home in Arcadia.

Heber Enoc Diaz, 27, of Pasadena was booked for murder at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles on April 19, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials. He is being held without bail.

Authorities claim Diaz beat, stabbed and strangled Chyong Jen Tsai. Tsai’s body was discovered in the backyard of her residence in the 300 block of East Forest Avenue in Arcadia on April 9 by construction workers who were working on her home. Tsai had been building a second unit on her property at the time of her slaying, according to NBC4 News.

Early in the investigation, sheriff’s officials said they believed Diaz ransacked Tsai’s home after killing her.

KABC Channel 7 reported the Department of Coroner determined that Tsai died from the “combined effects of multiple sharp force injuries, multiple blunt trauma and asphyxia.”

Arcadia police officers responded to a call from construction workers at Tsai’s home who found her body at around about 7 a.m. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. Her car, a white 2005 Lexus RX300, was missing but found parked in the 900 block of Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock last Thursday evening, April 18. The following morning, Diaz was arrested by deputies without incident at his apartment in Pasadena.

A motion by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger for the county to put up a $20,000 reward passed, but since investigators developed the leads resulting in Diaz’s arrest the money is expected to go unclaimed.

Authorities have not released any information on a possible motive for the murder.
